What are the different types of naming
celebration?
You
can get as creative as you want, but basically we see naming
celebrations as falling into three categories:
Naming Ceremony
A formal event, as close to a traditional christening as
you might imagine, but without the religious elements! As
with a traditional christening or civil wedding ceremony,
it is followed by a 'reception' where the guests can enjoy
food and drink, give their gifts, chat to the parents and
meet the baby properly if they haven't already. There would
normally be a special naming ceremony cake, which everyone
will share, and the parents and/or supporting adults usually
make a short speech and toast.
Naming Day
More informal than a naming ceremony, a naming day still
implies something a little more than just a party. Although
in more informal surroundings, it would usually still take
place with a celebrant or family friend officiating proceedings.
There would be an informal 'ceremony', usually including
supporting adults, and a few readings and speeches.
Naming Party
The most informal naming celebration, with the emphasis
very much on having a party! However, you may still want
to incorporate some or even all of the aspects of the naming
day, but perhaps keeping them short and sweet, and just
doing it in a more informal style.
